An Introduction to Google+
With the previous failures of Google’s attempt to enter the social media sphere with ‘Buzz’ and ‘Wave’, Google+ was not predicted to do well in the industry.
However, for the last two weeks a huge Google+ buzz has been created. Although not officially launched, and joining was only available by invitation, over 10 million users have joined the site and it’s predicted to increase to 20 million users by the end of the weekend. Users are said to have shared one billion pieces of content a day, and the +1 button has been hit 2.3billion times . As of today, people with Google accounts may join Google + by going to http://plus.google.com. According to Erick Schonfeld at Techcrunch “If these numbers are anywhere near accurate, Google+ could very well become the fastest growing product in the history of the Web”.
One presentation I have seen (found here- you must scroll through in order) suggests that Google+ isn’t trying to compete with Facebook it’s trying to make Facebook irrelevant. Google+ is moving everything to cloud technology- with the probable integration with Google docs etc; Google will become the ultimate sharing and collaboration site.
The whitepaper includes an explanation of the different features of Google plus including Circles, Hangouts, Sparks, Huddles and Instant Uploads. It also includes tips and tricks such as how to create a vanity URL.
