App to save lives
On January 25th 2011 The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District has launched one of the best apps we have seen recently for the iPhone in the medical field. This app aims to cut down the fatality rate of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Doseofdigital.com gives a good summary:
“The basic idea was this: You call 911 (to start a formal emergency response), then a secondary alert would go out to the mobile devices of people nearby who have registered as willing and able to provide emergency help. Imagine if you urgently needed a doctor and an ambulance was 5 minutes away, but a doctor (or paramedic) was in the store next to where you were. That person could help instantly if they only knew that someone needed help.”
“The application also directs these citizen rescuers to the exact location of the closest public access Automated External Defibrillator (AED)” (Firedepartment.org).
Although this app is only available in the US (which is free of charge) the department have announced that they will “share the tools to allow other public safety agencies to deploy the Fire Department application at no cost to their community-Although pioneered here, the value of this application is far too important to society to not ambitiously share it with other communities around the globe” (Firedepartment.org).
There is a powerful video which shows how the app works which can be found here.
This app (available here) is truly showing how the iPhone technology can be used to save lives, we’re sure someday they’ll even have defibrillator apps!
