Are iPads the new detail aids?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal describes how pharmaceutical companies in the States are distributing thousands of iPad computers to their sales reps to smarten up their pitch to doctors, and at the same time giving Apple a foot in the door to business customers. Companies like Abbott Laboratories, Medtronic Inc. and Boston Scientific are among the companies making the move, while many others say they are testing out the devices.

Here in Ireland several companies are running trials using the iPad - with its quick to load apps and smart screens they are proving to be popular detailing devices. Sales reps also appear to be much happier using the device. Its slim profile (no bulky laptop bags here), long battery life (you can comfortably perform a 2 hour presentation without looking for the plug socket) and weighting in at about 0.7Kg, they are much lighter than traditional laptops.

The market will take some time to sort itself out and it will be interesting to see if the iPad competition will be as fierce as for the iPhone. Already in the fourth quarter of 2010, Apple's share of the tablet market fell to 75% from 96%, while Android saw its market share increase to 22% from just 2.3%. Pharmaceutical companies will have ever greater choice in tablet hardware but it will be critical for content developers to build applications that can be used on multiple platforms.
