Touchscreen- Where’s it all going?
Touchscreen technology has come a long way from its inception in media labs in the late 1960’s or its introduction to computers with HP-150 in 1983. The question now is can it go any further before the novelty wears off?
Touchscreen has become integrated into our lives- we use kiosk check-in at the airport, we get directions from navigational kiosks in shopping centres, and some even use touchscreen menu’s in restaurants.
Touchscreen has been brought into a viable commercial market by major corporations such as Apple who have successfully integrated touchscreen into our everyday lives via the medium of music players, phones etc. In fact, touchscreen technology has been evolving in front of our very own eyes into ‘Multitouch’ technology made popular by apple. A touchscreen allows the user to use one finger to navigate around the screen. Multitouch however, has multiple point of contact i.e. you can manipulate the page in different ways by using different movements with multiple fingers (points of contact). Sounds complicated, I know! The apple products use a very simple form which allows you to pinch the screen with two fingers to zoom in and out. To those in the touchscreen market, this is a very crude form of multitouch but the thing to take note of is that Apple introduced these concepts into the market without us even realising- setting them up in a very competitive position going forward. Multitouch is the future of touchscreen. 10Gui have even invented a system which allows you to use all ten fingers to navigate around.
This subject imposes the question, where is the real functionality of Multitouch? Does it just belong in Sci-Fi films such as minority report? Obviously corporations like apple have imbued elements of the technology into their products but that’s barely the tip of the iceberg for the capabilities of Multitouch. Just look at this video which harnesses Multitouch with ‘gesture recognition’- particular useful? No. Potential? Undeniable.
Clearly the era of touchscreen technology has only just begun. For those of you who still crave the feeling of the clicky buttons from a 3310- it’s time to embrace the new generation that has surfaced- there’s no going back now!
