Yet another reason why tablets belong in healthcare

There have literally been hundreds of blog posts about this topic, and the pros and cons of using tablets, about the monopoly of the iPad, and about the longevity of the hardware so I’m not going to restart the debate here. What I do want to discuss is that when you move past the politics of the price and the brand- tablets are extraordinary powerful devices and can actually impact on the healthcare industry.

I just saw a post about a 10 minute test that patients can take on a touchscreen computer, tablet or iPad which can indicate early signs of Alzheimer’s. According to the article, the standard ‘what’s your name?’ ‘Who’s the prime minister?’ questions will not necessarily indicate early signs of the disease. The test, which has been developed in Cambridge University, is designed to highlight the early memory lapses that occur such as finding your car in a large car park or remembering your shopping list.

This test, which is currently in testing phase, is one of hundreds of diagnostic tools currently being created on the tablet platform. If tablets have done anything for the healthcare industry is that it has given a viable commercial industry which companies are willing to invest in which overall means a higher investment in patient well-being. It has also lead to higher investment in e-detailing which will hopefully increase physician access to CME accreditation resources.

The constantly improving capabilities of the devices means that currently we’ve just hit the tip of the iceberg for the healthcare industry- even look at the fact that the iPad2 processes graphics nine times faster than the original iPad which can mean increased capabilities of reading scans for physicians. Now imagine what the iPad 6 will do.

Whether it’s the iPad, the Galaxy, or the Xoom it doesn’t really matter, the point is there is an market here (which is no longer considered niche) which can be utilised for financial returns, increased physician CME accreditation facilities and most importantly and ultimately improved patient care.
