Safefood for Life

The Company
Since 1999, Safefood has been the body responsible for the promotion of food safety throughout the island of Ireland. Safefood have been influencing the education of food safety since it’s inception and in 2004, they developed a teaching resource called ‘Safefood for Life’. Once successful completing the examination, students would meet the minimum level of training required to work in the food industry. This interactive educational resource aimed at transition year students (or Key 3&4 Home Economics sections in Northern Ireland) would then be available for free in schools in Ireland.
The Brief
Safefood wanted to create a teacher led resource for transition year students (or Key 3&4 Home economics sections in Northern Ireland). There needed to be a class slides, teacher resources, Student notes and student resources (to include activities on each topic).
There are eight topics to be completed on the course: Food Hygiene-Why bother? Food Contamination, Food Delivery & Storage, Food preparation cooking and service, personal hygiene, design of premises& pest control, Cleaning and HACCP.
There also had to be an online testing facility and correct the tests instantly.
The Product
Combined Media undertook the large product and produce an animated, user-friendly resource. The disc was split into four main sections:
- Course Slides- Slides for use in the classroom, which’s information, would form the core of the course. The slides use animated graphics and encourage interaction among students.
- Teacher’s Notes- This section contains the slide kit for teachers which explains the information on every slide, a suggested teaching approach, an explanation of how to use the interactive elements and an exam guide. All notes come in an easy to read format in pdf and teachers are encouraged to read the notes before class. There is also a version of Adobe Acrobat Reader within this file just in case they computer they’re using doesn’t have it
- Student’s Section- Each of the eight topics has four accompanying interactions in this section. The series of interactive exercises tests them on the knowledge they should have learnt from the course slides on that topic.
- Student Notes- This section provides students with pdf document with a condensed version of all the core information of the eight sections.
The exam resource centre was designed to be user-friendly for students using a multiple-choice format. The resource corrects the exams instantaneously, thereby reducing teacher correction time. The exams in the Republic of Ireland are a Primary Certificate in Food Hygiene certified by The Environmental Health Officer’s Association (EHOA). The exams in Northern Ireland are a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering is certified by The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
